The Golden Circle Trail
About this expedition
Some places you visit. This one you ride into. For three days the Icelandic horse — small, tireless, unchanged for a thousand years — carries you through the landscape that shaped a nation: across the rift valley where the continents quietly pull apart, past hot springs that breathe steam into the morning air, to the lip of a canyon where the Hvítá river turns to golden thunder.
You ride in tölt, the breed's famous fourth gait, so smooth the sagas claim a rider could carry a full horn of ale without spilling a drop. Evenings end the Icelandic way: farm-cooked food, geothermal water under an open sky, and the kind of silence only the highlands know. In winter, the northern lights may join you. In summer, the sun barely sets at all.
Small groups, local guides, honest horses. This is Iceland at the pace it was meant to be seen.
Journey highlights
1
Þingvellir National Park
Ride the rift valley where two continents drift apart and the world's oldest parliament first met beneath the cliffs.
2
Geysir Geothermal Fields
Steam drifts across the trail as Strokkur hurls boiling water skyward — your horse barely lifts an ear.
3
Gullfoss Waterfall
Feel the thunder of the Golden Falls long before you see it, then descend the canyon rim in the spray-cooled air.
4
Kerið Crater Lake
Circle the rim of a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater, its still lake glowing teal against slopes of red scoria.
5
Geothermal Evenings
End each day the Icelandic way — sinking into naturally heated water as the highland sky turns to fire.
