South Coast & Black Sands Expedition
About this expedition
The south coast is Iceland at its most elemental: fire below, ice above, and the Atlantic carving the space between. This four-day expedition follows the old farm routes beneath Eyjafjallajökull — past waterfalls that drench the meadow trails in drifting spray, within sight of glacier ice older than memory, to the black volcanic beaches where the sagas say the first settlers landed.
Each day ends in a warm guesthouse with the sound of the sea; each morning begins with fresh horses and a new horizon. The finale is unforgettable — a long, drumming canter across Reynisfjara's jet-black sand, basalt sea stacks rising from the surf and puffins wheeling overhead.
For riders with some experience who want Iceland wild, close and unfiltered.
Journey highlights
1
Seljalandsfoss
Begin beneath a waterfall you can walk behind, its spray drifting over the meadow trail as the horses warm to the road.
2
Skógafoss Waterfall
Sixty metres of falling water and, on clear mornings, a double rainbow standing over the trailhead.
3
Sólheimajökull Glacier
Ride within sight of a living glacier tongue — crevassed blue ice spilling down from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap.
4
Dyrhólaey Arch
Puffins wheel above the great stone arch while the horses pick their way along the clifftop paths.
5
Reynisfjara Black Sands
The expedition's crescendo — a long, drumming canter across jet-black sand beneath the basalt towers of Reynisdrangar.
